Framestore Recreates the Frozen World of Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age

How do you make extinct creatures feel as believable as animals in a nature documentary? Framestore shares the visual effects work that helped bring the spectacular world of Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age to the screen.

The visual effects team was responsible for bringing a wide range of prehistoric animals to life, including saber-toothed cats, giant wombats, dwarf elephants, snow sloths, woolly mammoths, and the largest ape ever known to have lived. Many of these creatures had never been depicted on screen before, requiring extensive development work to ensure they felt authentic and believable.

To support the series’ natural history approach, Framestore focused on creating realistic performances, detailed environments, and highly complex fur simulations. Artists across the studio’s London, Montreal, and Mumbai facilities collaborated to recreate the diverse landscapes and wildlife of the Ice Age, helping to tell the stories of the remarkable animals that once inhabited this frozen world.
