How do you recreate eighteenth-century Savannah and stage a devastating print shop fire without anyone noticing the visual effects? Discover how BlueBolt delivered 160 invisible VFX shots for the final season of Outlander, from seamless historical environments to the iconic Forget-me-not flowers at Craig na Dun.
BlueBolt has revealed the invisible visual effects work created for Outlander Season 8. Led by VFX Supervisor Nic Birmingham, the studio delivered 160 VFX shots, from historical environment recreations and dramatic fire sequences to the iconic Forget-me-not flowers at Craig na Dun.
The team worked closely with overall VFX Supervisor Jon Neill to recreate late eighteenth-century Savannah, Georgia. BlueBolt produced CG set extensions for the city’s distinctive estate homes, along with 360-degree aerial establishing shots of the town and harbour by transforming and combining filming locations in Scotland and Derbyshire.
One of the biggest sequences centred on the devastating print shop fire, combining specially filmed 2D fire and destruction elements with volumetric CG smoke and additional smoke effects. BlueBolt also created and animated the series’ iconic blue Forget-me-not flowers, accelerating their growth and bloom to support their recurring appearance at Craig na Dun and complete the story’s circular arc.
