One Piece Season 2: Framestore Brings Smoker, Wapol and Chopper to Life

Discover how Framestore brought some of One Piece Season 2’s most iconic characters to life across more than 570 VFX shots, from Smoker’s dynamic smoke powers and Wapol’s larger-than-life design to the emotional performance of Tony Tony Chopper.

In bringing Smoker to the screen, Framestore focused on creating smoke effects that could feel both intangible and powerful. Extensive look development explored different levels of density, speed, and shape, ensuring the character’s abilities remained faithful to the source material while feeling grounded in live action. The team also developed transformation effects inspired by sharp, tactile transitions rather than traditional dissolves.

Another major challenge was the creation of Tin-Plate Wapol and Tony Tony Chopper. Wapol’s oversized mouth was redesigned with a more anatomical structure and supported by a flexible jaw system capable of interacting with multiple performers. For Chopper, Framestore developed several character forms and built new animation tools to preserve the clarity of his facial performances and silhouette, helping the beloved character retain his emotional appeal throughout the season.
