Superman: Inside Weta FX’s VFX Breakdowns – From the Kaiju to the River Pi

These three VFX Breakdowns offer an in-depth look at the visual effects work created by Weta FX for Superman, focusing on the massive Kaiju, the intricate detailing of its eye, and the complex FX simulations behind the River Pi sequence.

One of the key challenges was bringing the 300-foot-tall Kaiju to life across an extreme range of scales, from wide shots to ultra-close macro views of multiple body sections. To achieve seamless transitions without losing detail, the team developed a resolution-independent approach that combined painted textures with procedural enhancements. This allowed them to preserve fine surface detail while minimizing the need for multiple high-resolution breakaway models.

Equally ambitious is the River Pi sequence, designed to feel both familiar and entirely otherworldly. Built on physically grounded simulations, the river flows like a natural body of water while defying conventional expectations through its behavior and appearance. Instead of a traditional fluid surface, the simulation instanced emissive and transmissive geometric blocks, creating a flowing river of light and metal enhanced with optical effects to reinforce its alien nature.
