For Predator: Badlands, Framestore delivered complex visual effects work centered on a new kind of Predator, combining expressive facial animation with fully CG alien environments.
At the heart of Framestore’s contribution is Dek, a young Predator whose performance required a careful balance between emotional clarity and alien menace. The animation and rigging teams focused on translating subtle human facial performances into a believable non-human anatomy, supported by a sophisticated facial system.
A major creative challenge was making a talking Predator feel expressive without losing its otherworldly identity. This involved detailed mandible synchronization and facial articulation tied to a newly created language, resulting in a performance that remains distinctly alien while emotionally grounded.
